Well above-average dual stick shooter

by Apocryphiliac · February 18, 2011

With the update allowing users to turn off dynamic lighting, framerate and performance issues aren't a problem anymore (on a 4th generation device, at least). Technically, the game is well-executed and does not lack polish.

Gameplay is a little more methodical and complex than in most other games of this type. This isn't a bad thing by any means, but it seems to be a problem for some reviewers with the expectation the game will play like others that they already like. I really like the way you have to manage your ammo and sprint ability, as well as find better ways to approach hordes of enemies. You cannot simply barrel into them and expect to survive.

Graphics and sound are very good. I think the graphics when using the dynamic camera are excellent, in fact. There may be some visual confusion if you use the dynamic camera, and if so, then you can use the top down camera which is the standard dual-stick shooter view and it works just as well here as anywhere else, and so do the controls, although I don't use auto-fire so I can't comment on that.

An easy 4/5 stars for me, and I think it will be a 5/5 after another content update or two.

The gameplay is rather boring and the character animation is pretty bad.

App will load but as soon as you make a selection, Options, Start … etc … you dump to the home screen.

Tried restart of iPad, delete reinstall … nothing worked …

Don't know about other hardware setups but … no work on iPad2 …

Bottomline … wait for update before buying …

Robert9001

Hm I got mixed feelings. For $2 I was expecting a little more refinement. The game lags and stutters, and my soldier runs soooooo slow it's aggravating, plus using the right virtual stick to shoot is a pain. Environments contain very detailed textures. I found the larger battlefields easier in champion to play than with that cramped first level in classic. Plus, it's so dark! How about making the game run at 60fps and making the graphics brighter and the topdown pov smarter and I'll change my mind about etolis. In the meantime, I'll have to struggle just play this half baked game. :(
